Basic Prompt Creation

Fundamentals

A well-structured prompt gives Claude the right information to produce a useful, accurate response. Instead of typing a vague question and hoping for the best, you can follow a simple 5-step framework that consistently delivers better results — whether you're writing, researching, or creating content.

The 5-Step Prompt Framework

Step What it does Example
1. Role Tell Claude who it should act as. This sets its expertise, tone, and perspective. "You are a social media marketing expert specialising in B2B technology companies."
2. Context Give background information — who the audience is, what the situation involves, and any relevant details. "Our company is launching CloudSync Pro — a secure file-sharing platform. Audience: IT managers at mid-sized companies."
3. Task State clearly what you want Claude to produce. Be specific about scope and quantity. "Write 3 LinkedIn posts for our launch — each focusing on speed, security, and integration."
4. Examples Show Claude the tone, style, or voice you want. A short sample is worth more than a long description. "Example voice: 'Your team moves fast. Your tools should too. CloudSync Pro syncs in real time.'"
5. Format Specify how the output should be structured — length, layout, hashtags, headings, bullet points, etc. "100–150 words. 3 hashtags. End with a CTA."
You don't need all 5 steps every time — but the more you include, the better Claude's output will be. Start with Role + Task, then add the others as you need more control.

Prompt 1 — CloudSync Pro LinkedIn Posts

This example puts all 5 steps into practice. It asks Claude to write three LinkedIn launch posts for a fictional B2B product, each with a different angle. Use it as a template by swapping in your own product details.

Full prompt

You are a social media marketing expert specialising in B2B technology companies.

Our company is launching CloudSync Pro — a secure file-sharing platform for remote teams. Audience: IT managers at mid-sized companies (50–500 staff).

Write 3 LinkedIn posts for our launch. Each post focuses on: (1) speed (2) security (3) integration.

Example voice: "Your team moves fast. Your tools should too. CloudSync Pro syncs in real time."

Format: 100–150 words. 3 hashtags. End with a CTA.

Prompt 2 — Your Company's Winter Specials

Use this template to create a LinkedIn post promoting your own company's winter specials. Fill in the placeholders in [square brackets] with your real details before pasting into Claude.

Template prompt — replace the placeholders

You are a social media marketing expert specialising in [your industry, e.g. retail / hospitality / services].

My company is [Company Name] — [one sentence describing what you do and who you serve].

We are running a winter specials promotion this season. Our key offers are:
- [Special 1: e.g. 20% off all services booked in June]
- [Special 2: e.g. Free consultation with every new client]
- [Special 3: e.g. Bundle deal — buy 2, get 1 free]

Write 1 LinkedIn post promoting these winter specials. Use a warm, inviting tone that encourages action before the promotion ends.

Example voice: "[Paste a sentence from one of your previous posts, or describe your brand voice — e.g. 'friendly and professional']"

Format: 100–150 words. 3 relevant hashtags. End with a clear CTA that directs people to contact us or visit our website.
